Good For Her: Ma (2019)

on June 16, 2025

Sometimes the party comes to you and sometimes it burns to the ground.

This week’s Good For Her spotlight goes to the ultimate hostess with the mostest trauma: Sue Ann, better known to the teens (and now all of us) as Ma.

Directed by Tate Taylor and starring the incomparable Octavia Spencer, Ma is a revenge horror thriller that delivers themes we love: bottled rage, sinister small-town secrets, and a woman who has finally had enough of being overlooked.

On the surface, Sue Ann is just a lonely vet tech trying to make friends with the local teens by letting them party in her basement. What starts as generosity quickly turns into obsession, manipulation, and a truly unhinged (and kind of fabulous?) payback campaign.

Sue Ann was bullied. She was humiliated. She was discarded. But instead of playing the quiet victim, she weaponized that trauma into a full blown horror movie power move. Did she maybe go too far with the paint and pet scalpel? Sure. But let’s not pretend we didn’t cheer when she turned the tables on her childhood tormentors.

But don’t get it twisted, Ma isn’t a hero; she’s a warning. She reminds us what happens when you push someone to the edge and expect them to stay polite about it.

So this week, we raise our Solo cup (but maybe don’t drink what’s in it) to Ma: a woman who turned her basement into a battlefield and finally made them remember her name.

Verdict: GOOD FOR HER. (Just… don’t text her back.)
