This week’s Good For Her spotlight goes to Jennifer Check: a high school “it” girl, satanic ritual sacrifice, and boy eating succubus.
Directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody Jennifer’s Body is a blood filled horror that explores tense themes of sexuality, female empowerment, and intricacies of friendship dynamics in teen girls. After being mistaken as a virgin and offered up as a sacrifice in a Satanic ritual by a sleazy, clout chasing indie band Jennifer doesn’t die…she is reborn. With a new hunger and lust for blood, Jennifer devours the male gaze one teenage boy at a time.
Good. For. Her.
But underneath the bloodshed, there is a deeper more intimate exploration of friendship. Especially the toxic, obsessive kind that can feel like love but hurts like hell. Jennifer’s relationship with Needy is complex, co-dependent, and even queer as hell. Jennifer is a monster, yes, but she is also Needy’s monster. Which makes it all the more tragic when it all comes crashing down.
Jennifer was hurt. She was used. And she became one hell of a monster.
Verdict: GOOD FOR HER (but maybe keep your boyfriends inside).
